VIOXX (ROFECOXIB) Vioxx, also known as Rofecoxib, is a cox-2 inhibitor drug that was manufactured and marketed by the pharmaceutical firm of Merck & Company. Vioxx was a medication commonly prescribed to patients for the treatment of arthritis, osteoarthritis, acute pain conditions, and dysmenorrhoea.
Incredibly, it was voluntarily withdrawn from the market in 2004 because of concerns about increased risk of heart attack and stroke. Rofecoxib was one of the most widely used drugs ever to be withdrawn from the market. Prior to Merck's withdrawal of the drug, the FDA reported that Vioxx users had a much greater chance of cardiac instances.
