EPHEDRA Originating from the ephedra plant, ephedrine has been advertised as a Chinese herb ("ma huang") that will relieve asthma and allergy symptoms, as well as enhancing athletic performance and weight loss.
Ephedrine is the active ingredient found in many popular diet pills, over-the-counter decongestants, allergy medications, herbal energy boosters and herbal asthma remedies. Among these products are 2-Way Max, Beta Blockers, Brand Mini-Tab, Dexatrim, Diet Fuel, Ephedrine HCL, Fat Predator, Herbalife, Herbalift, Hoo, Hydroxycut, Leptoprin, Metabolife 356, Metabolite, Mini-Thins, Pseudophrine, Quaifen PseR, Ripped Fuel, Stackers, Suddenly Slim, Synephrine, Thermagenics, Trimspa, Truckers Love It, X-Treme Lean, Xenadrine, and Yellow Jackets. In April, 2004 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration banned ephedra nationwide. Currently, there are investigations being conducted pertaining to popular dietary products that used ephedra and whether it led to strokes, heart attacks and seizures and death. The FDA has reported deaths and over 800 serious side effects linked to Ephedrine.
