BAYCOL (CERIVASTATIN) Baycol, also known as Cerivastatin, is an anti-cholesterol drug that was manufactured and marketed by Bayer Pharmaceuticals. Baycol was a medication commonly prescribed to patients to aid in lowering cholesterol and triglycerides by blocking a specific enzyme in the body that is involved in the synthesis of cholesterol.
In August, 2001, the United States Food and Drug Administration announced that Bayer Pharmaceutical Division voluntarily withdrew Baycol from all markets because of over 480 reported cases of the potentially deadly condition called rhabdomyolysis. Rhabdomyolysis is a condition that results in muscle cell breakdown and release of the contents of muscle cells into the bloodstream. Symptoms of rhabdomyolysis include muscle pain, weakness, tenderness, malaise, fever, dark urine, nausea and vomiting. Deaths were associated with patients who used Baycol. It is believed that far more instances of serious side effects and death caused by, or associated with taking Baycol, have occurred but have not yet been properly diagnosed or reported to the appropriate governmental agency. If you, or a family member, have taken Baycol and think that you or your family member may be suffering from its side effects, please call Lanham & Blackwell, P.A., for assistance and more information. We are an experienced law firm that can help you in protecting your legal rights and holding negligent parties responsible. | |
